Coach drivers: Our school suffered from a driver who was very willing to leave out places on the planned itinerary but unwilling to visit alternatives. We are not the only ones to have suffered in this way. So make sure that everything is in writing. We wanted our coach to drive along the Via Appia Antica to see the tombs, and were willing to forego a stop at some non-Classical attraction on the way to Sorrento in exchange. No way.

What to see on a journey to Italy - and in what order

If staying in both Rome and the Sorrento area, go to Rome first. Then Sorrento comes as a relaxation of the pressure. The standard of accommodation is likely to be better outside Rome, too. Always better to keep the best till last.

Warnings

Guard your money and possessions. Two attempts were made to rob me in Italy, one in the Roman underground and the other in a bus station in Naples. One student's camera was stolen having been put down for a minute or two outside our hotel in Sorrento.
